Overview

The congress attendees will be international in scope and will include persons using, producing, or assessing the ability and visual needs of someone to use, motorized vehicles. The Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology has previously mounted six highly successful world research congress on the visual challenges of motorized vehicles. We believe physicians, engineers, designers must collaborate on technologies to identify the risk laden driver, and to invent, integrate, and evaluate crash avoidance systems compensating for visual or visual-cognitive challenges. The purpose of The Eye, The Brain and The Auto World Research Congress is to explore medical, technical and policy aspects of: Autonomous vehicle technology and its relationship to the medical world. To achieve this the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology (DIO) will invite 30-35 of the world’s leading authorities to present virtually for two days on the topic of autonomous mobility as a disruptive technology and its effects on the health industry. In addition to facilitating access to health care appointments, this technology will allow sensors within the vehicle to capture health and wellness related data of major significance. We also hope to more fully understand the role automotive licensure plays in the wellbeing, independence, societal integration and healthcare economics in an American Society now largely dependent on the automobile for transportation.

Objectives
  1. appreciate “Vision”, its range of abilities, its challenges and how vision and cognitive impairment, age, crash avoidance systems, glare, ergonomics, vehicle design, highway architecture, road signs, driver distraction among other factors, impact safe driving
  2. assess more accurately which visual problems make any real difference to drivers
  3. identify improved research methods to study vision and subsequently, to standardize driving assessment and licensure evaluation in the United States
  4. appreciate the potential that big data management and the disruptive IT technology enabling autonomous mobility developing in the transportation industry may play in healthcare and wellness
  5. understand the role that user’s vision and cognition will play in a journey from no driver assist technology to full autonomy—i.e. S.A.E. Level zero to level five
  6. better understand how the medical field can contribute to and benefit from the development of autonomous vehicles and the technology essential for their safe universal acceptance
  7. have a clear understanding of the progress being made in autonomous vehicle development and the potential role this disruptive technology might have in human medicine
  8. have reviewed progress in the field of human-machine interface in automotive transportation and the roles that vision, and cognition will play in this rapidly unfolding field
