Overview

Reviews strategies providers can use to best support patients in stopping tobacco use. Principles of motivational interviewing and appreciative inquiry are explored. Medications for treating tobacco dependence and key issues in prescribing are discussed. Treatment planning with the goal of preventing relapses to regular tobacco use is reviewed.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Understand rationale for combining medications with counseling or coaching to increase the likelihood of patients quitting tobacco use permanently.
  2. Learn and apply basic skills of Motivational Interviewing and Appreciative Inquiry to support patients in stopping tobacco use.
  3. Increase awareness of tobacco treatment medications, including types of nicotine replacement and oral medications, and how to counsel patients about using them.

 Henry Ford Health is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
