A Mother's Story: Ethical Lessons from a Parent's Perspective (2026)

This session features a guest speaker and author of Dear God, Take My Baby, who shares her lived experience as the parent of a child with a chronic health condition. Through a deeply personal and chronological narrative, she recounts her journey navigating the healthcare system in search of answers, diagnosis, and appropriate treatment for her daughter—offering a powerful perspective through a mother’s eyes. Her story highlights interactions with healthcare providers that reflect both compassionate care and significant challenges, including delays in diagnosis, fragmented care, limited access to resources, and the impact of implicit bias. This session emphasizes the importance of listening to family perspectives, strengthening communication, and fostering collaborative, patient- and family-centered care to support ethical practice and improved outcomes. Following the presentation, an interdisciplinary panel composed of the book's author, a physician, and a nurse will discuss their experiences reading the book and the impact its lessons have had on their respective roles. Panelists will explore practical applications of the book's concepts in clinical care, leadership, teamwork, communication, and professional development. Audience participation will be encouraged to foster discussion regarding translation of these insights into healthcare practice.

1. At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to describe key factors impacting patient and family experiences, identify barriers in care delivery, and apply patient- and family-centered approaches to improve communication, trust, and clinical outcomes.
