Overview
The Introduction and Discussion sections are among the most frequently critiqued parts of a scientific manuscript and arguably the most challenging sections to write. This interactive faculty development session will examine common pitfalls in both sections, including inadequate clinical context, unfocused background information, weak study rationale, unclear study aims, unsupported interpretation of findings, insufficient contextualization of results, and poor narrative flow. Through examples from high-quality manuscripts and practical editorial strategies, participants will learn how to critically review, evaluate, and provide constructive feedback on these sections to strengthen overall manuscript quality.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Differentiate the distinct purposes and rhetorical functions of the Introduction & Discussion sections of scientific manuscripts
  2. Identify and evaluate common pitfalls in the Introduction section
  3. Identify and evaluation common pitfalls in the Discussion section
  4. Apply a practical, structured approach to providing constructive feedback on the Introduction & Discussion sections of manuscripts when mentoring trainees?
