Beyond the Cigarette: Secondhand Smoke and Non-Cigarette Tobacco Products

The purpose of this program is to enhance providers’ understanding of secondhand smoke and the multiple long-term health effects it can cause, as well as the characteristics and health effects of tobacco products other than commercially manufactured cigarettes. Providers will learn about implications for clinical practice and treatment, along with policy implications related to smoke-free environments and the current state of regulations around “other tobacco products” (OTP). This is the third in a series of CME modules dedicated to enhancing provider support for treating tobacco dependence in the clinical setting, particularly among patients eligible for lung cancer screening.

You must complete the pre and/or post test and evaluation to receive CME credit. 

1. Understand the health effects of secondhand smoke and the importance of smoke-free rules, and learn to advise patients on prohibiting smoking in their homes.
2. Improve providers' knowledge and expertise related to non-cigarette tobacco and nicotine products, especially new and emerging non-traditional products.
3. Integrate knowledge of non-cigarette tobacco products in clinical practice to advise patients on risks of various products.
